The middle of the open ocean is a barren place with little nutrients. For quite some time, we believed that the ocean ridges and rugged features on the ocean floor would cause a disruption in the current. This would cause nutrients to ‘build up’ in certain areas where these disruptions would occur and aid in life thriving in these regions. Although we believed this for quite a while, turns out we were pretty wrong.
